Team GB - Roller Derby

Joseph in Year 11 travelled down to Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Telford at the weekend to take part in a training session with Team GB Junior Roller Derby.

He has worked extremely hard for his place in Team GB.  They take part in games across the country.

Joseph plays for his club, Newcastle Junior Roller Derby (NJRD) which is based at Benfield. They will be taking part in two games at the Five Nations this coming weekend at Walker Dome.

Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played on an oval track by two teams of five skaters. It is quite a physical sport where the team try to stop the other getting passed.  The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.  Games can go on for one to two hours.  It is very popular in USA but in the UK there are only a handful of teams at the moment but would like to increase it’s popularity.  Elbow and knee pads should be worn as well as wrist guards, mouth guards and helmets.

The Junior Roller Derby is for 8 to 18 year olds and there will be a World Cup in 2027.

Well done to Joseph for gaining his place in the team and letting us know about Roller Derby.

If anyone wants to find out more about the team, they are on Facebook and Instagram, or you can get more details at newcastlejuniorrollerderbyuk@gmail.com
