The HIARP turned 30 this year. It opened in September 1994 in Heaton Manor School, and we decided to have the celebrations in May to tie in with Deaf Awareness Week. Our celebrations have included:
- a joint celebration with deaf students currently at JPA and staff who were at Heaton Manor when the provision opened
- visits by ex-students
- communication tips displayed around school
- form time video, created by our deaf students, teaching students and staff how to sign the song Happy Birthday as well as providing some information on deaf culture
- visits to form classes as requested to teach a selection of requested BSL signs
- cakes – of course! Students decorated every cake with top tips that support them in class.
Remember students have access to deaf awareness resources and information in the HIARP classroom on the VLE, and that further information about the provision can be found on the school website. We are always happy to have visitors or to answer any questions.
