ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

At Jesmond Park Academy we have over 500 students who have English as an additional language.  In order to support our students with EAL we have a team of experienced specialists working with them in school.  We deliver targeted language interventions to improve students’ English language skills.  They focus on vocabulary development, phonics, grammar, reading comprehension, and speaking fluency.   We also track students’ progress and adjust interventions as needed.  Students are given regular assessments, which help measure language development and academic achievement.  If you have any questions in relation to EAL please contact Jenan Spires on jspires@jesmondparkacademy.org.uk or 01912818486.

Jon Lovatt – High Level Teaching Assistant

I am a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant with a specialism in EAL (English as an Additional Language) at Jesmond Park Academy.  I work with small groups of our diverse and multicultural students; enabling them to learn English language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We cover the basics of English – from Phonics right through to more complex and challenging tasks, including Reciprocal Reading Comprehension. Working alongside a team of Learning Support Assistants, the aim is to allow all our EAL students to access the whole curriculum, and to enrich their learning experiences. I have many years’ experiences of working in the field of EAL – and apply my skills and knowledge to fun, engaging and meaningful English lessons daily.
