Students, in JPA’s Additionally Resourced Provision for deaf children and young people, have been involved in several exciting activities over this school year:
BSL Sign of the Week
Students have introduced a Sign of the Week displayed on the screens around school.
BSL club
Year 7 students delivered a lunchtime BSL club to their peers.
PowerPoint live captions
An increased number of teachers are using live captions, and some students have found this supports their learning in the classroom.
Unfolding Theatre
Students participated in a drama workshop by Unfolding Theatre. Unfolding Theatre aims to show deaf people that they can be creative and participate fully in theatre.
Initial Travel Training
One Year 7 students transitioned from the taxi to independent travel on the bus, to and from school.
School of Sexuality and Sign Health
Students accessed these workshops to support their understanding when in mainstream Biology and Citizenship lessons.
Visits from Choices College and City Learning
Year 9 students have started exploring Post 16 provision so they can make an informed decision in Year 11.
Young Inspectors
Young Inspectors visited school to explain this extra-curricular opportunity to our students.
The Newcastle Deaf Club
Students worked with the Newcastle Deaf Centre to create and film a deaf awareness film that was shared in Year 7 form-time during Deaf Awareness Week.
Japanese workshop and Centre for Life
Students were selected to be involved in workshops organised by volunteers from Durham University and The Centre for Life to widen their Cultural Capital knowledge.
We are already planning opportunities for next year when we will have 14 students in the resource provision. Watch this space!
Remember students have access to deaf awareness resources and information in the HIARP classroom on the VLE, and that further information about the provision can be found on the school website. We are always happy to have visitors or to answer any questions.
