Attendance

An Absolute Priority

Our policy on attendance is quite simple. Every student is expected to attend on every occasion the academy is open. The only acceptable exception is when illness or injury is so serious that it prevents the student from attending. Every absence is followed up and checked.

Parents should be aware that daily attendance is compulsory for all children between the ages of 5-16 and that it is their legal responsibility to ensure their children attend regularly. Failure to ensure attendance can result in ‘Legal Action’.

Research shows that daily attendance is the biggest single factor in helping students to achieve above average examination results. To allow your child to miss school for any non-medical reasons is not in his/her best interest and likely to have an unnecessary negative effect on their progress. Non attendance also places children at risk and in some cases can result in students being drawn into anti-social or criminal behaviour.

There are of course isolated special circumstances for absence such as attending a funeral or keeping a specialist hospital appointment.

Leave of absence taken during time

Headteachers are no longer able to grant leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Attendance is linked with achievement/attainment and the Government recognise that taking holiday in term time could have a massive impact on academic success.

Families can request the academy to authorise student leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. However:-

What to do when your child is unavoidably absent

If your child is going to be absent, please contact us before 9:30am if possible. Telephone 2818486, select option 1 and leave a message stating clearly your child’s name, year group and a brief description of the reason for the absence.

Please contact us on each day of absence, or if you know how many days your child is going to be absent please state their return date. When your child returns following a dated absence a note is required for your child to give to their Form Tutor.

Medical Appointments

Please make all non-urgent doctor/dentist appointments after academy hours – the day finishes at 2:40pm - or during the holidays. We understands that this isn’t always possible, however, students should attend prior to or following a medical/dental appointment and avoid a full day’s absence.

If we are unaware of the reason for your child’s absence we will make every effort to contact you on the first day your child is absent either by telephone or by letter. It is absolutely essential that you let us know as soon as possible of any absence.

Punctuality

It is important that your child is punctual. The academy day starts at 8.30 am. The expectation is that only in exceptional circumstances will children be late (emergencies, etc. and we are sensitive to these occasions). There are detentions for lateness and in persistent cases fines can be issued through the School Improvement Service.
