Year 9 Parent/Carer Events

Please find below, details of two important events coming up for you and your child this half term.

Year 9 Options Evening

In order to support our Year 9 students in choosing subjects to be studied in Years 10 and 11, we would like to invite you and your child to our Year 9 Options’ Evening.  This event will be held in school on Tuesday 4th February 2020, 5:00pm – 7:30pm.  Please arrive from 4:50pm for a 5:00pm welcome presentation in our Main Hall.

After the short welcome presentation, the remainder of the evening will consist of the opportunity to attend a variety of subject talks, and to talk more informally with our teaching staff about the different subjects that are being offered to your child to study in Years 10 and 11.

There will be an opportunity to attend subject talks and to talk to Heads of Faculty and members of subject staff about the range of subjects that are being offered to your child to study in Years 10 and 11.  In addition to subject, talks there will be subject specific stalls available for you to visit.

Students will receive their Year 9 Options Booklet prior to the evening in Registration.  This booklet will help you and them to finalise their subject choices for Years 10 and 11.  This booklet will contain a particular range of subjects for them to choose from.  This will be the most appropriate choice of subjects for them, where the course content studied and the structure of assessment will lead to the best possible outcomes at the end of Year 11.  The booklet will explain this in more detail, give further details of the Options Evening itself, and include a deadline to return the choices form.

We expect all of our parents/carers and students in Year 9, where possible, to attend our Options Evening.

Year 9 Parent/Carer Consultation Session

We are holding our Year 9 Parent/Carer Consultation Session on Tuesday 11th February 2020 between 3:00pm and 7:00pm.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to speak to your child’s subject teachers, not only to find out more about their progress, but also to discuss any matters that may help us to support them.  You may also have the possibility to discuss option choices for Year 10 where appropriate.  Wherever possible, we expect students to accompany parents/carers to this evening.  For this session, you will be given a timed appointment with your child’s teachers.  It is necessary, however, to limit the time to a maximum of eight appointments of five minutes.  (You can, of course, see fewer than eight).  This allows the evening to be more efficient and reduces the time waiting.  If you require a longer appointment, it will be necessary for you to make arrangements with the subject teacher for a date and time convenient to you both.

Please indicate on the sheet enclosed with the posted letter, the most convenient times for yourself, and select the teachers that you wish to see.  The form should be returned to your child’s Form Tutor or Student Reception no later than Monday 20 January.  Alternatively, you can post or email your request direct to Mrs Caroline Chirnside.  (Email:  Please return the sheet even if you are unable to attend.  We are unable to guarantee that any appointments will be made if the form is returned late.

Ms Walker (Director of Key Stage 3), Mr McLaughlin (Head of Year), Ms Weston and Mrs Richardson (Year Managers), representation from the Student Support Team, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Strong (Careers Leaders) will also be available throughout the evening on a non-appointment basis.

Appointments will be posted on Friday 31st January.  If you are unable to attend after the appointments have been made, please notify Mrs Caroline Chirnside as soon as possible.

In summary, our continued advice to you and your child is:

If you or anyone accompanying you have access requirements, please let us know before you arrive, by telephoning or emailing Mrs Chirnside.

We look forward to seeing you all at both our Year 9 Options Evening and our Year 9 Parent/Carer Consultation Session.

Yours sincerely

Mr N Holmes
