Message from Karen Blackburn re School Closure

20th March 2020

Dear Parent/Carer

Confirmation of School Closure

Following on from the Prime Minister’s announcement on Wednesday I want to write to confirm that our school will close to most students on Friday 20th March at 2.40pm.  The advice from the Government is that if it is at all possible for your child to be at home, then they should be.

Nevertheless, from Monday 23rd March, where it is not possible for a child to stay at home, school will be open for students who fall into the categories below:

Again though, the Government strongly advises that all students stay at home wherever possible.

We will contact families who have a child with an EHCP and those who fall into the category of vulnerable families.

The school will be open from 8.00am until 2.40pm and will be staffed by teachers. To maintain normality as best we can, students will be required to wear uniform and will follow the normal school times.  Bus services are likely to be running a reduced service so please check their website for further details.  School lunches will operate as normal, although there may be a restricted offer.

School will be closed to all other students.

It is with a heavy heart that we need to make this decision as instructed by the Government. Some families and students will undoubtedly find things harder with school being closed to them. There are further details on our website with detailed guidance and instructions about how you can support your child’s education from home.

Free school meals will be provided for all those entitled to them, even if they are not attending school.  Chartwells, our catering company, will provide a packed lunch service on a collection only basis in our main reception to all students entitled to free school meals but who are not attending school.  These students will be able to collect their lunches at 12.20 pm each day.  For those free school meal pupils still attending school, their lunch arrangements will run as normal. We are working with the Local Authority to support children eligible for free school meals on a longer term basis and will update you regarding this provision as soon as possible.

We will also write to parents/carers of Year 11 and 13 students about the Government’s plans for their GCSE and A Level grading as soon as we receive clarification on this.

The Prime Minister has not set a timescale for when school will reopen for the wider school population. Therefore, it will be important for parents/carers to monitor the school’s website for further updates. Please monitor this for further information during the first two weeks of the closure. If the closure is extended beyond this period then I will write to all parents/carers with further information.

Can I wish you all the best during this period and urge you to follow Government advice so that you and your family stay safe and well during this uncertain period.

Yours sincerely
