Local Authority Education Update 15/5/20

Schools advice

Newcastle City Council fully supports the return of children and students to childcare settings, schools and colleges.  Here they flourish into healthy, inquisitive and successful young people ready go out into the world and contribute to our communities and to wider society.

However, the health and safety of our children, students and the staff that support them in these settings is our shared number one priority.

The ambitious and aspirational ‘roadmap’ set out by the Prime Minister on Sunday evening will require huge changes to the way that schools operate. We need to be sure that any new arrangements meet social distancing advice.  Only then can we ensure that everyone can be confident about the safety of returning to school.

The Prime Minister said that 1 June was the earliest date that schools can begin the process of opening more widely.  In order to do this safely, there is a lot of planning and organisation required.  The headteachers in our schools, colleges and early years settings are already working hard with the staff and council officers to plan how to achieve this.  As new arrangements are put in place, a cautious and carefully planned approach will have the best chance of success.

Schools, colleges and early years settings will be providing detailed information to parents and carers once these new, safe arrangements are in place. In the meantime, please be patient and allow schools the necessary time to get on with making things safe for the return of children, students and staff.

Music Activities for Pupils – Local Heroes

An update on this project from Georgina Biddle

Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far in our Local Heroes project.

We have had some really great responses from young people accessing our Pop and Rock resources from home, and thank you to everyone else who has been in contact with us.

Please do feel free to share all resources as far and wide as you would like; all resources for each week will remain live on our website for at least the duration of school closure.

This week our musical focus is Classical Music.  To access our resources, please go to the Local Heroes Classical Music Week section on the MPN Newcastle website:

There are lots of resources to choose from, including play-along activities for Ode to Joy, resources and activities centred around the different musical periods, a Carnival of the Animals listening activity, links to the BBC Ten Pieces resources, downloadable worksheets and much more.

Please also see our Local Heroes Activity Menu on our website for some ideas for each key stage to encourage our young people to get creative.

All are welcome to contribute and share responses with us, so please do get in touch either via email through to SISMusicHubAdmin@newcastle.gov.uk  or on social media:
